Light arms in Planetary Strife are defined as those that are carried on one's person, or wielded by a human being. Below is a list of such arms. See Weapons in PS for a full list of all weapons.

Handguns

Small, short-barreled guns meant to be fired one or two-handed. Usually carried as sidearms or as civilian defense.

Derilict Rean

A 9mm semi-automatic pistol designed by Patrick Rean, a Derilict Republic Army Captain. The Rean is the standard firearm for the Derilict Army. The Rean is capable of both standard fire and 3-shot burst fire. Its magazine carries 18 rounds, and its light recoil and simple design allow it to be used with minimal training.

However, the gun is sensitive to debris, and must be cleaned regularly. Otherwise, the gun has a tendency to jam during combat.

  • Easy to use.
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to conceal

Disadvantages

  • Vulnerable to jamming if unmaintained, especially during burst-fire.
  • Lacks stopping power.

Saris OverKill 60

A .60 caliber semi-automatic. The OverKill, manufactured by the Aldari-based small-arms company Saris, is one of the largest and most powerful handguns in the galaxy. Despite this, most firearm experts show nothing but scorn for this weapon, due to its low 5-round magazine capacity, dangerously high recoil, and the fact that it sounds like a cannon when fired. Still, the massive OverKill is a frequent sidearm of heavy infantry units, and is standard for the Aldarian Heavy Infantry.

Advantages

  • Excellent stopping power.
  • Capable of reliably piercing standard bullet-resistant armor.

Disadvantages

  • Heavy recoil, capable of doing physical harm.
  • Noisy.
  • Relatively poor accuracy.
  • Low magazine capacity.
  • Heavy and awkward.

Saris Firebore 50

A .50 caliber semi-automatic. The Firebore is a sleek, heavy gun designed for brief and violent encounters. Manufactured by the Aldari company Saris, its magazine holds a total of 10 rounds. The Firebore is criticized for its weight and recoil, along with its low magazine capacity. However, its praised for its stopping power and surprisingly-high accuracy. It also is easy to maintain.

  • Sleek and easily concealed.
  • Requires little maintenance.

Aldarian Pistol

Also known as a Lightning Pistol or Lightning Gun, the Aldarian Pistol is an energy weapon fires a laser to ionize a path of air, followed by a powerful arc of electricity. It's used both as a less-lethal weapon for subduing people and as a deadly weapon.

The Aldarian Pistol is a standard sidearm for the Aldarian Light and Heavy Infantry.

Advantages

  • Instantly stops an attacker.
  • Excellent accuracy.
  • Ignores armor.
  • Capable of taking out large vehicles at full power.
  • Can be adjusted for the situation, capable of stunning or killing.
  • Excellent battery life.
  • No recoil.

Disadvantages

  • Dangerous to use in conductive environments.
  • Batteries are expensive and have a long recharge time.
  • Vulnerable to damage from the weather or percussion.
  • Heavy and awkward.
  • Indicator lights and electricity arcs can give away a shooter's position.
  • Useless against anything protected by a shield or DEF Emitter.

Plasma Pistol

Powerful, but extremely cumbersome. The Plasma Pistol is an energy weapon that fires packets of plasma. Extremely dangerous, but it shortcomings prevent it from being a standard sidearm. The barrel and frame is extremely large and bulky, with the magazine attached to the top of the barrel. The magazine holds a meager four shots, the blasts of plasma are inaccurate, and the weapon has a rather short range due to blooming.

Advantanges

  • Extremely powerful, capable of damaging and penetrating heavy armor.
  • Minimal recoil.
  • Lights things on fire.

Disadvantages

  • Heavy and cumbersome.
  • Blooming causes effectiveness to quickly disintegrate at long ranges.
  • Somewhat inaccurate.
  • Minimal magazine capacity.
  • Large magazines.
