The ISA Phalanx (Designation IS-X-29-2) is a battle frigate in Planetary Strife. Originally an X-29 Cargo Frigate, its captain, Eyrina Haford, had it extensively customized. It's a boxy-looking craft roughly 40 cSn in length and 30 cSn in width and wingspan.

The Phalanx came into Eyrina's possession during the Battle of Legacy, where she was given the craft as a reward for her work. Already modified with concealable guns, Eyrina had it further modified to suit her mercenary work, its most striking addition being the two large, relatively flat wings on the sides and the hangar bay on the top. The craft is now heavily armed and armored for its size, and capable of performing a diverse number of tasks.

The Phalanx crews 13, plus an additional 4 to pilot the IS-34 Quadfury Heavy Fighters located in its Hangar Bay. It also carries Eyrina's own fighter, the Enmity.

Ship Design

The ship is built for a staggering variety of tasks. First and foremost, it's been redesigned primarily for for combat. However, it has a lot of hold-overs from when it used to be a cargo frigate.

Power System

With the large number of additions and equipment attached to the ship, the Phalanx's power system is somewhat insufficient. The typical X-29 Frigate uses a simple power cell matrix to provide power, since the ship normally isn't equipped with anything not related to cargo.

Before Eyrina Haford took possession of it, the Phalanx was installed with a secondary power cell matrix, to help power its weapons. Eyrina then proceeded to install a Mark-IV Reactor in the ship, at expense of cargo space. However, the ship's electrical design is incompatible with a reactor system. As a result, the Reactor's sole purpose is to charge the power cell matrices, which then power the ship.

Like most large ships, the Phalanx is outfitted with an Emergency Battery Power Supply in case of power failure.

Propulsion

The propulsion system was completely re-worked on the Phalanx. It originally ran on a single rear-mounted LAMFM, but was later replaced with two Nuclear Impulse thrusters. After Eyrina got ahold of it, she added an additional rear-mount impulse thruster, along with one mounted under each wing. This allows for fairly fast acceleration for the ship's size, and a decent top speed.

Weapons and Defensive Systems

Perhaps where the Phalanx has been overhauled the most over its life. Most X-29's are completely unarmed, but early in its days, the Phalanx was outfitted with concealable railguns and missile bays.

After the Battle of Legacy, its new captain, Eyrina, started a battery of expensive customizations. The railguns were replaced with Plasma autocannons, and a Mark-V Heavy Plasma Cannon was added to the front of the ship. Wings were also added to the ship, creating ports for a new railgun and plasma turret on each wing.

Later, after the Battle of Borea Solar, it was further customized. Ports meant for fighter docking were modified, providing an additional plasma turret and regenerating Pulse Rifle on each wing.

The missile bays are generally used for Swarmer anti-fighter missiles, with a few nuclear missiles thrown in for combat versus large ships. It also has a payload bay for heavy weaponry.

Defensively, the ship's armor was modified, its AMT rating increased by 8 points. Defensively, it includes dual shield generators, one acting as a failsafe for the other. It also has a nanotech auto-repair system, allowing it to recover on long jaunts away from a shipyard.

Carrier Capabilities

Initially, the Phalanx's carrier capability was limited to two fighter ports on each wing, built to accept IS-34 Quadfury Heavy Fighters. However, these were later changed to weapon ports.

Instead, a small hangar bay was installed on the top of the vessel. Capable of housing six Quadfury fighters (or similar), the hangar benefits from the nanotech auto-repair system installed on the ship, and is capable of furnishing minor repairs to the craft held within.

The Phalanx regularly houses four Quadfury fighters to help defend itself, along with Eyrina's personal fighter, the Enmity.

Cargo and Salvage

The primary purpose of the X-29 cargo frigate is, as the name suggests, a cargo freighter. While Eyrina's upgrades have cut heavily into the Phalanx's cargo space, it still has a respectable cargo bay, capable of carrying several tons of material.

One of the secondary purposes of the X-29 is as a salvage ship. While some of the Phalanx's salvage drones have been removed, it still is capable of salvaging space wrecks. It's equipped with two drones, capable of gathering scrap and small components to sell later. It also has a magnetic salvage crane to tow entire ships.

It's equipped with a salvage bay to store debris for decontamination. It's connected to the cargo bay, but separated, since the salvage bay is often exposed to space.

History

Not much is known about the early appearances of the frigate. Originally named the Cattop, it was one of Cameron Efita's vessels during the Battle of Legacy. The frigate was the only captured vessel, which was taken by rookie mercenary Eyrina Haford, renamed the Phalanx, and outfitted with an array of weaponry and ports for fighters.

It grew in fame over the next four years, performing public missions for the IceStar Alliance. However, its most notable mission was disrupting the surprise attack by the Derilict Republic against Borea, in what became known as the Battle of Borea Solar. After the battle, it returned to IceStar and was refitted with heavier weaponry and a hangar bay.
