{{#ifcategory:FTaWSotR|}} {{#ifcategory:HttP|}} {{#ifcategory:ANWO|}} {{#ifcategory:NotL|}} SimpleBots are robotic "creatures" on Refuge Isle. They are an innate part of the Refuge and cannot survive for very long away from the Isle.

History

The SimpleBots were originally used as 'laborers' to built the first buildings on the Refuge, primarily the Admin Tower. They were put into storage for some time since then, but, with the 1.1.8 upgrade, they have grown into a much greater role at the Refuge. They are currently being used primarily to guard the parameter of the Refuge, but several are on standby in case of other needs.

Culture

Although technically nonliving, the SimpleBots have gained what has been called 'pseudosentinence' by some. The SimpleBots are a rather peculiar form of a hive mind. The machines are all contolled from the 'Hive' underneath the Admin Tower. Upon recieving a command, the Hive-based machine ('QueenBot') will send a SImpleBot out to perform its task. There is an intricate network of tunnels and shafts throughout the Isle (buildings are made to accomodate these designs and is not uncommon to see a Bot come out of a vent in a building) that allow for a Bot to move from the Hive to anywhere on the Isle.

It is currently unknown whether or not SimpleBots can truly 'think.' The SimpleBots act half as machines and half as near-humans. Two SimpleBots that have been disconnected will come up with different answers when given the same question on how to process a command, but will gladly destroy themselves if given the command.

Communication

SimpleBots are equipped to transmit and recieve messages in most human protocols. They have a reciever/transmitter capable of sending messages up to fifty miles, depending on frequency, reactor load, and several other factors. SimpleBots can also be used as a glorified cell phone. In the event of a disconnect, several SimpleBots can group together and form a 'Hive-in-exile' so they can use the collective processor power to form a plan. One would be incredibally surprised to find that machines can be so dynamic in the face of chaos.

Upgrades

The SimpleBots are designed to facilitate future upgrades. Several have been performed, but the only major one was the 1.1.8 upgrade. Details on this upgrade are listed below:

  • Significant improvements in User Interface. The SimpleBot can now be commanded like an intelligent human.
  • Weapons support. The SimpleBot is currently armed with two TI-84 chainguns.
  • Improved Pseudomorals. The SimpleBots now have support for basic human morals. In the event of a disconnect with the Hive, the SimpleBot will use a basic framework of moral to process its reactions to the environment. A SimpleBot can therietically develop a 'personality' if disconnected long enough.
  • Other minor changes.
