Shades are magical spiritual creatures in Fanciful Tales and Wild Stories of the Refuge. Appearing as a colored, upright shadow, they usually have large claws for use in combat. Shades come in two varieties: Spiritual, which are summoned from an afterlife, and Magical, which randomly appear anywhere with a high magical concentration.
Shades have been a common standby for magicians, priests, and necromancers as manual labor; they never tire, require no pay or maintenance, and follow orders unflinchingly. They also work effectively as guards, and can be resummoned at will.
