Elementals are magical humanoids in Fanciful Tales and Wild Stories of the Refuge. There are four basic types of elementals, Fire, Earth, Water, and Air, but there are also other types of elementals that have evolved from the four basic types and there are half-breeds when one type of elemental mates successfully with another. Each basic elemental type has it's own plane of existence where they may reside. If they reside elsewhere, death may bring them back to their home plane where they may continue to live.

Fire

Fire elementals, also known as the living fire, are a race of sentient beings that, for the most part, reside on the Fire Plane. In their natural form their bodies are made completely of fire, but they may also take on a corporeal form which is human in appearance. The child hood of a fire elemental usually lasts around a century and most living fire raise their children on the fire plane for this part of their lives. Once they hit puberty, the tradition for fire elementals, is to be sent to the Terran Plane as humanoid infants with their memory repressed to learn the nature of humans. Usually after 20 to 30 years, living as a human among humans, a fire elemental will 'awaken' to the realities of what they are and to the corruption of humankind. It is actually a rather self-fulfilling prophesy since an awakening will not occur until they have undergone a very traumatic experience at the hands of the humans. In this way, a racial hatred for humans has been fostered within most of the living fire. Only those whose parents have refused this tradition (and consequently accepted exile from the fire plane) and those elementals whose mental capacities for love and compassion exceed that of a normal living fire escape this racial mentality. It has been noted that half-breeds are more easily able to overcome this speciesism. (This concept has yet to be realized IC by Jewels, though Vergil knows it full well.) Earth

Dryads

To describe dryads it is first important to explain the nature of plants. They all have their own life force and while not quite sentient, they have their own way of feeling, experiencing, and reacting to the world around them. Pure dryads are linked with their souls to the life force of a specific tree in Ermaria having been originally created by the Designers based on old human myths. Most dryads live their whole lives within their tree being more than content to pass the time in this way simply meditating and observing the world from where their tree stands. Chopping down this tree effectively kills the dryad whether it is in the tree or not. Some dryads, though, have restless and curious spirits that like to wander away from their tree.
