The spell you used just now was a failure. Although its power was great, that is not the form of sovereign star.
You are familiar with its incantation, but you do not know that incantation's meaning, or its message...You don't know who it is.

Overview

Standing tall at six feet, two inches, Amarac Doran has the appearance of a man over seventy years old. He has light skin, green eyes, and greying hair, that is receding at the center of his head. The wrinkles carved into his skin by his long years, add to the tired emotions in his eyes which have seen better times. Despite that, he holds himself with dignity as he remains one of capable spellcasters in existence. He wears a woolen cloak that is simple and brown, seeming very old. It covers his cream-colored folded robe. Doran is not known to carry special equipment or items. He is a private person who does not share information about his past or his personal life, retreating to his study, abound with hundreds of books, journals, maps, and statistical data.

History at the Somand College

Doran holds the rank of Second Seat Master, thereby second in command for administration over the school. As a result, he does not oversee or manage any one department, but heads of respective departments must answer to him. Should the need arise, Doran will personally fill in for instructors unable to teach, but prefers to not instruct students under the rank of three, because it is difficult for him to teach concepts in magic to those with no comprehension or point of reference. Beyond the minor politics of school administration, he is not known to be particularly close to, nor to be enemies, with other individuals at the school.

Plot

Attack on Eyer

Doran first appeared when Luca and Kaegan's instructor for Second Rank Theory was unable to attend class. He appeared to them as a simple old man who had a few disagreements with the upkeep status of the room. He explained that instruction at this level was not his specialty, because it is like explaining sound to someone who cannot hear. He continued the lesson by creating a visual representation of how magic is formed and bent. He created small orbs of light that combined their powers into threads, then sheets, and bent to the nature of the power desired. Doran concluded the lesson, convinced that he had no significant impact.

Two weeks after the substitution, Luca visited Doran for personal tutoring about not being able to preform magic at all. Doran simply informed Luca that she needed to find her self-confidence first, that she would never be successful in magic if she believed she would fail before she began. Luca was disappointed to not be given groundbreaking insights in Atlean skills, but took the advice to heart.

During the Attack on Eyer, Doran appeared again, guiding students out of the Somand College. Doran encountered and recognized Luca immediately before being confronted by Ren Therin, who attempted to entrap the pair and assassinate Doran. A battle between the two master mages ensued, leaving Therin paralyzed on the floor of the central hall before his apprentices appeared to defend him. Doran sent Luca toward the surface before large explosions filled the chamber as he fended off a dozen students and a freed Ren Therin. His current status and location are unknown.

Powers and Abilities

Doran's primary skill is his knowledge of Atlean magic. It is, perhaps, the most extensive knowledge of any other master alive today. One rumor at the school is that he is the only mage who has the ability to use the spell Sovereign Star to its fullest extent and produce its true form. Due to the high level of that particular spell, the chance for students to ever see a lower tier instructor demonstrate the technique at all is very small, reserved for only those truly dedicated to the art.
