An’eth’ara, na lethall’en!

This is the Refugia Eco-Report for the month of December 2019, reflecting on our growth and changes experienced in November. Let's get this out of the way here, and then not worry too much about it as we go forward: our numbers look much worse than they are. As you might have noticed, we've experienced an extreme population growth (click the link for an image of the chart!) over the month of November. On November 16th, we had 17 nations, approximately the same number we've had since shortly after we were founded. Starting on that date, Refuge Isle and I teamed up to create a recruitment telegram and drove it out to the masses. As of December 1st, we were at a whopping (for us) 60 nations!

Most of these nations were founded shortly before joining us. Even the most environmentally-stunning starting nation can only have an average in both scores of around 800. I think that having a higher number of nations who share our goals and direction on environmental issues will outweigh the short-term drop in our numbers. But, speaking of those numbers, we should still take a look at them.

As a quick reminder, our goals are to, by the end of the year, reach a regional average of 1500 environmental beauty score and 5000 eco-friendliness score.

We’ll start with Environmental Beauty (click the thumbnail to the left for larger image):

As of 01/11/2019, our regional score was 1249.81, 250.19 away from our goal. And as of 01/12/2019, our regional score was 793.41, 706.59 away from our goal. We are trading short-term success for a long-term result.

But look back at the chart with me. How close did we get to the end result? At the peak of our growth, November 16th, we were at a regional score of 1376.89, a mere 123.11 points from our goal. With the rate of growth we were experiencing at the time, we would easily have passed 1500 by 31/12/2019. I'm proud of all of you, we did a wonderful job!

Now, as for Eco-Friendliness (click the thumbnail to the left for larger image):
This is the more exciting statistic of the two, in my opinion. Just like with environmental beauty, we've experienced an extreme drop over the course of this month. As of 01/11/2019, our score was 4354.51, 645.49 points from our goal. And as of 01/21/2019, our regional score was 1856.49, 3143.51 points from our goal. This obviously doesn't look great on its own, and is another investment we're making in the future of our region.

But here's why I think this is the more exciting statistic:

Look at the peak. As of November 16th, we were at 5165.22, exceeding our end-of-the-year goal by 165.22 points. Congratulations everyone, we did it! We not only reached our goal, we went past it far enough (with 45 days left before our deadline) to share the excess with environmental beauty and put that over our goal as well.

Overall, I would say that the general scope and confines of this ecological report don't do proper justice to what this month has brought us, which is why I provided the context. We've picked up 43 new nations, all of whom saw our recruitment telegram and thought that our environmental focus as a region was something they wanted to sign on with. Looking at the population growth, and the long-term prospects that will come of it to our region, I think we're in as good a place as we've ever been. And I'm excited to see the numbers start ticking up again by the end of the year!

Suggestions for Improvement
When I was starting this project with the first Eco-Report at the beginning of October, I laid out a few ideas for this section in a list, thinking that I could pull from that list when there wasn’t any current event I could tie to something. There’s a big one on there that I think will be controversial and unliked, so I will avoid that one for now. Instead, I’ll talk about something that I’ve come to really enjoy over the past couple years: public transportation.

Depending on who you ask, the numbers for exactly how responsible the main emitters of greenhouse gasses by industry/economic sector are can vary, but the top four are usually Electricity/Heating, Agriculture, Industry, and Transportation. Right now I’m trying to suggest low-impact changes to your daily habits to improve the environment, so I can’t do much to dive into agriculture and industry. Don’t worry, we’ll get there eventually (she said, and was promptly removed as Councillor of Needling-Us-About-The-Environment). So far, we’ve addressed using Ecosia (Nov Eco-Report) and lowering the amount of single-use plastics we consume (Oct Eco-Report). But we haven’t tackled any of the big four directly.

It’s generally agreed upon that transportation makes up 14% of greenhouse gas emissions globally, and 28-30% of emissions produced in the United States and Canada. And over half of those emissions come from personal vehicles. We can’t do much in the short term regarding the remainder, most of which comes from commercial trucks transporting goods, so we’ll focus here. Obviously not everyone lives in a place where public transportation exists, but those readers might still find the following information interesting.

I haven’t had a car since August of 2018. In that time, I’ve looked for alternate means of transportation, and learned more about the layout of my city than I ever did when I had my own vehicle. My city has both light rail and bus options, and these are generally inexpensive. There’s a stereotype that the United States doesn’t have many options for public transport, and in my research I confirmed that was true, but I was surprised to find more cities than I expected had some sort of option. In fact, the largest city in the US without a public transportation system is Arlington, Texas, with approximately 395,000 people. The second-through-fourth largest cities without public transportation were all approximately in the 100,000 range, and were entirely within traditionally-conservative states (Oklahoma, Kansas, and Florida).

Some basics. In terms of pure environmental impact:
# A standard city bus carrying seven passengers is more fuel efficient than a single-occupancy car.
# A fully-occupied train is on average fifteen times more fuel efficient than a car, full stop.
# Buses produce 20% of the carbon monoxide per passenger mile as a single-occupancy car.
# Most global light-rail/tram systems run entirely on electricity.

On average, a single person choosing to cut a personal vehicle out of their travel plans cuts their carbon footprint by up to 30 per cent. This is obviously significant, and one of the best things we can do as individuals to improve our impact on the environment. For those of us who live in places without public transportation options, however, what would be a better option?

Walking or biking, if and when it’s possible, is a good start. I grew up in a town without a public transportation system, and I remember the first time it occurred to me to just walk somewhere. I had gotten off work, and ended up walking approximately four and a half kilometres to where my ex was working, and then another one and a half back to our house. It was fascinating to me; I had grown up in this town, and I had never experienced it in the way I did while on foot. The same goes for where I live now; I really enjoy walking and using public transportation because there’s an intimacy to experiencing a place in that way. I bought a bike soon after that first real walk, and used it more often than I did my car.

Of course, I’d never suggest to walk or bike all the time. If you have a car, and it’s snowing or raining and you need to go somewhere, or if you work a significant distance from your home, you should use it. Therein lies the next tip: use it less. In the same manner as when talking about single-use plastics, better should never be the enemy of good. I think that getting groceries once per week and making dinner every night at home is better than going out to eat three nights per week.

In these ways, we can all lessen our environmental impact and start making the world a better place!

Environmental News
Now for some quick positive environmental stories before we go!

First up, a story about how a town in New Jersey that had to weigh where to put a new solar-panel array to power their water treatment plant. Their decision? To build it over the very water basin that they were treating! They took this idea from a vineyard in Napa Valley in California, which took its power from a series of panels floating on top of their irrigation pond. State and local governments, utility companies, and even federal agencies have contacted the project lead for information, interested in taking this idea and running with it.

Next, a report on the continuing decline in global coal usage. The use of coal-fired electricity in 2019 is expected to have fallen by approximately 3 per cent, the largest annual drop for coal power since it’s been recorded!

And finally, because it’s a topic that’s sort of close to my heart, an article on how artists and scientists should work together, giving the latter’s work the former’s ability to more easily communicate complex ideas and concepts to the public. Come for the warm fuzzies, stay for the hilarious attempt to force the idea of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) into the public discourse.

As always, please always feel free to contact me with any news, suggestions, or improvements you’d like to see in future ecological reports. I try to respond to all telegrams within 24 hours and RMB posts much faster. New nations who are reading this eco-report for the first time, I need your help! Send me your suggestions for how to improve our environmental impact, interesting sites, and uplifting stories about the environment so that I can include them in future dispatches!

Refugia Update - 7/11/2019

An’eth’ara, na lethall’en!

Welcome to the first of an irregular series of updates and newsletters sent to your regional homepage by none other than me, your Councillor of Annoyances and too much enthusiasm! I’ll be collecting stories and interesting events from around Refugia and sharing them from time to time, once I have enough to fill an entire dispatch. Here we go!

Z-Day

Z-Day was a world event that saw the undead spring up in every nation, in every region of the world. Fortunately, we were given plenty of forewarning and were able to begin researching a cure (or training our military for extermination forces) immediately. Once the hordes were upon us, several world governments chose to embrace their new undead overlords, becoming first fodder, then extra forces. The zombies existed for approximately thirty-three hours before magically disappearing, along with the piles of dead they left in their wake.

Top researchers from Refuge Isle, Ortharion, Chacapoya, and myself, as well as several of their lesser known associates within the region began researching a cure within moments of the initial outbreak. Refuge Isle also cut off our travel gates to other regions so that we could focus on our own infestation without worrying about outside interference. Once a cure had been developed, they did the only reasonable thing: they strapped vials of cure on the top of ICBMs and let fly. With Ortharion calling targets and leading strategic operations, Refugia was cleared of all zombies within five hours, with only 67 million casualties (thanks Kuviran). Given that the number of infected never rose above 3.3 billion, that means Refugia was, at its worst point, 12% infected.

This was a colossal achievement; because the countries of our region came together so selflessly and worked together toward a common goal, we were able to rebuild quickly and turn our efforts outward. Refuge Isle sent a task force of researchers and cure bombadiers to assist in Arctic’s efforts to cleanse its nations of the infestation, while Refuge Isle and I worked in conjunction to assist our allies in New West Indies and Canada. It would be impossible to give a solid number of zombies cured by Refugi cure missiles, but I would estimate our impact outside of our own regional borders to be in the realm of 200 billion cures delivered.

Though Refugia (and our closest allies) was able to overcome this trial due to unprecedented teamwork, the best context is to look at the final tallies for the world. The population of the world at the start of Z-Day was 682.1 trillion. At the end of the event, 107.9 trillion survivors remained, a mere 15.8%. The infected numbered 181.5 trillion, while 392.7 trillion people, 57% of the global population slightly more than a day prior, were dead.

Good job, everyone <3
Calamity Refuge, the long-sleeping unknown land beneath the waves of the Sea of Culture has resurfaced suddenly and violently. In doing so, it has displaced enough water to flood many other services, such as the Calamity Refuge Discord server, which is itself now in a state of decline. Arch-Administrator McGrath, who has been the leader of Refuge Isle, has taken up their rightful spot at the head of this land to lead it back to its once-known greatness. If you are interested in coming to our island, you can report to immigration services by clicking the "Register" button, and a simplebot will be around to take your vitals and information. Once you have been declared a new resident, you can see our many wonderful attractions, such as our roleplaying section, where Sylh Alanor leads a team of LARPers, the new political and diplomatic headquarters for Refugia, and many open common areas where you can discuss with your fellow Refugi the goings-on of the day.

Our regional map has had a new addition! Chacapoya was teleported to Refugia through unknowable and grand arcane means, and has begun settling into the area. They have been gifted their own travel gate to the Refugi mainland and Refuge Isle for diplomacy purposes, and are entitled full privileges. All inquiries about the status of Chacapoya, its secrets (foreign and domestic), and the contents of its lint catcher should be directed toward the national secret order of leaders known only as “The Council”, located in Chacapoya City on the map below.

As a reminder, any member nation of Refugia can apply to be put on this map, just by filling out the application located here and sending it to me in a telegram, forum private message, or by taking a blade of grass from your backyard, topping it with a single tear, and closing it into a book you own but have never read.
An’eth’ara, na lethall’en!

Welcome to the new and improved Refugia Eco-Report, where the stats are compiled and graphics created several days before publication because I get easily distracted sometimes. A lot has happened since the last time I published one of these in January, most notably the establishment and disestablishment of New Refugia. As I’ve discussed those events in another dispatch, I won’t bother going into detail here. But going from 125 nations to 32 has greatly affected our stats.

I’m doing things a little bit differently this time, and I’m willing to adjust this pattern going forward. This month, I want to focus specifically on Environmental Beauty, as it reflects the results of environmental policy, while Eco-Friendliness is specifically the amount of money your government is spending on the environment. While the usual chart with befores and afters returns, I’m also introducing a new section highlighting and celebrating the top nations in the stat. If this section continues, I’ll highlight nations that have shown the most growth in the future, as I assume the top nations will remain in those spots due to inertia. So let’s get started!

First off is the hard Environmental Beauty stat (click the image to the left for a full-sized view). After so many nations left or ceased to exist within the region, their aggregate effect on pulling our stat down eased, gradually pulling our numbers back up, resulting in an April 1 average of 738.71. This rose gradually throughout the month, and was helped when Refuge and I moved our nations back to Refugia in the last weeks of April, resulting in a peak regional average of 1,149.48. This is approximately 230 points under our regional all-time best on November 16, 2019, 1376.89, and an increase of 410.77 over the course of the month, which hits a good foundation on which we can continue to build.

Shortly after we hit this peak, Refugia was featured, which brought with it a group of new nations and silly nations meaning to congratulate us on the feature, which plummeted our score, but by the time the stats were compiled on May 5, we were at 906.79 and rising.

In the same period, we can see the improvements of the regional top three nations when it comes to Environmental Beauty, Karen Matheson, Klyjanoragh, and myself (click the image to the left for a full-size view). Though all three nations are relatively old at this point, and don’t move as much in focused stats as younger nations do, you can still see gradual improvement in all three.

I guess this is a good time to mention that on top of avoiding repeating nations when I can on future run-throughs of this report, I will also, to the best of my knowledge, avoid using puppet accounts as well. So if Dinraal, Refugian Empire, The Sinking Lure, or An Actual Hurricane get in the top, they won’t be shared.

Suggestions for Improvement
It’s a bit of a rough time to be putting expectations on other people, I feel. We’re all experiencing a bit of life upheaval due to the pandemic, and I think that fulfilling our obligations toward each other while maintaining as much comfort as possible is all that should be expected. So take care of yourselves this month, especially those of you who have been shut in for six or seven weeks at this point. Play some Animal Crossing, or get a plant, learn some interesting recipes to cook, or pick up a new hobby. Self-care takes priority right now <3

Environmental News
As per usual, I’m going to be sharing some positive environmental news stories. Given the sensitive subject matter, I’m going to preface this with a warning. Most of the positive news about the environment over the past six or seven weeks are a direct result of the social distancing/isolation procedures being practised by many countries in hopes of slowing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the economic slowdown resulting from those practices. If you have a friend or family member who has died from COVID-19, I dearly apologise for your loss, and want to stress that I am not in any way celebrating the nearly 275,000 deaths at the time I’m writing this dispatch. That being said, we have been able to infer some fascinating things from this nearly-worldwide test.

The Coronavirus Offers a Radical New Vision for India’s Cities - Because of the nationwide lockdown, Indian citizens are experiencing the lowest air pollution levels in over a generation. Some villages are even starting to see distant mountain ranges they never realised were visible from their homes.

Disbelief in big cities as air pollution falls - Though this was published on April 11, it’s related to the last article and I thought seeing some of the sliders from New Delhi highlighted the issue as well as or better than the above article did.

Pakistan Hires Thousands of Newly-Unemployed Laborers for Ambitious 10 Billion Tree-Planting Initiative - A government project in Pakistan has hired more than 63,000 day labourers who were laid off due to the pandemic, and putting them to work planting saplings and protecting trees. I like this story a lot because it’s showing how governments can still take care of their citizens during the crisis while also doing good for the environment.

Building a just and renewable future on the Navajo Nation - In the United States, the Navajo Nation is using the shutdown of a major coal power plant in its territory as an opportunity to push for renewable energy all around the country.

Can small carbon footprints outlast coronavirus? - A writer in New York City deals with his world getting smaller during the lockdown, and starts coming to terms with how to change their methods of travel once that lockdown lifts.

In the middle of a pandemic, renewables are taking over the grid - Lower air pollution levels are allowing solar panels to absorb energy more efficiently. Combined with higher demand for renewable energy, this is resulting in lower costs across the board.

As always, if you have any suggestions, feedback, or articles you’d like me to share in future reports, please feel free to send me a telegram at any time. If you need someone to talk to because the lockdown is hitting you particularly hard, or just an ear while you rant off some steam, I’m always available. Be safe and healthy, friends.
Ceadaichte Mòir is a small farming village located in the western reaches of The Republic of Ustendelle on the border of Kingfisher Forest. The citizens of Ceadaichte Mòir have developed a relationship with the forest, utilising its regenerative powers as a source of infinite wood. They allow their children to play within the forest, though markers are placed a handful of metres into the trees as a barrier not to cross.

In AE607, Rizali Corvus arrived in town with their personal bodyguard Lyndh, as well as a youth named Kaegan. It was in Ceadaichte Mòir that they met Cathal.
